ENTERTAINMENT IS LAUGHABLE AT BEAR'S DEN
NIAGARA FALLS, NY, March 2005 - Award-winning comedian and actor Richard Jeni takes the stage at the Seneca Niagara Casino's Bear's Den showroom for 9 p.m. performances on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23. Tickets are $20 and available at SenecaNiagaraCasino.com, Eight Clans Gift Shop, ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster locations, including Kaufmann's stores.
Named one of Comedy Central's "100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time" and called a "flat-out hilarious" comedian by TV Guide, stand-up comedy is only part of Richard Jeni's repertoire. He also has made a mark as an actor, starring in his own TV series, in feature films and as an award-winning television host.
Growing up in an Italian-American section in Brooklyn, New York, where street fights, alcohol and drugs were a way of life, Jeni socialized with kids who were older and quickly learned to survive through his own style of comedy including dead-on imitations.
A mathematics wizard with a penchant for political analysis, Jeni combined these skills by graduating with honors with a double major in political science and economics from Hunter College. After graduation, he held a few junior executive-type positions that didn't go well. A chance to pretend to be a photographer accompanying a girlfriend on a trip to a local comedy house for a story she was writing for her college newspaper opened his eyes to the world of stand-up comedy.
After a slow year-long start, Jeni rose rapidly in the comedy world. In 1990, he had his first Showtime special, "Richard Jeni: The Boy From New York City." The show received three Cable ACE Award nominations. Two years later, he followed up with his second one-hour gig for Showtime, "Richard Jeni: Crazy From the Heat," which was the highest-rated stand-up special in Showtime's history. During this period, he was becoming a favorite guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He continued his tenure with Carson's replacement Jay Leno and has been on the show more than any other stand-up comedian.
In the 1990s, he was also approached for a coveted HBO comedy hour segment. The result was "Richard Jeni: Platypus Man," which won the Cable ACE Award for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special. The show formed the basis for his network sitcom of the same name that ran for one season on the UPN network in 1995.
His other comedy specials and awards include "A Good Catholic Boy" on HBO, Best Male Stand-Up Comic by the American Comedy Awards and a Cable ACE Award for his writing on A&E's "Caroline's Comedy Hour," which he also hosted.
Jeni's film debut was in "The Mask," where he co-starred as Charlie, best friend and sidekick to Jim Carrey. He was in the Movie Channel's original feature "National Lampoon's Dad's Week Off" with Henry Winkler and hosted The Learning Channel infotainment series "What a World."
