MANHATTAN COMING TO NIAGARA FALLS

Niagara Falls, NY, July 2004 - The Manhattan Transfer will give two unforgettable performances at Seneca Niagara Casino's Bear's Den Showroom Friday, August 6, at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tickets for the shows are $30 and available at SenecaNiagaraCasino.com, the Eight Clans Gift Shop, ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster locations, including Kaufmann's.

For more than 30 years, the quartet of Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Cheryl Bentyne has combined their voices into an incomparable four-part harmony that has consistently set new standards for vocal music. Their music extends from big band, bebop, doo-wop and vocalese to current rock-laced pop, fusion jazz, Brazilian sound, hip-hop and new jack swing. In every case, these styles reflect the Transfer's unique personality.

In its formative years, the group developed a strong cult following while playing in New York clubs. In 1975, they cut their Atlantic debut album, "The Manhattan Transfer," and landed their own highly experimental television show on CBS. They were particularly successful in Europe, where their next two albums, "Coming Out" and "Pastiche," brought them a string of Top 10 hits. A live album, "The Manhattan Transfer Live," soon followed. Around this time, Bentyne joined the remaining trio after original soprano, Laurel Masse, vacated the group in 1978, when a car accident left her jaw wired shut for three months.

"Mecca For Moderns" came next, including "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" and "Boy From New York City." The public and critics continued to bestow honors upon The Manhattan Transfer as they received the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group Grammy, and "Boy" reached number on Billboard. The Manhattan Transfer has earned a total of eight Grammy Awards, (plus Siegel and Bentyne's individual arranger Grammys) spanning 20 albums, and worldwide sales in the millions. They have the unique distinction of having won Grammys for each of their studio releases since 1979. In addition, the album "Vocalese", a compilation of complex material, earned 12 Grammy nominations - tied for the highest in Grammy history with Michael Jackson's "Thriller!"

Veterans of numerous sold-out world tours, they also reigned supreme as the "Best Vocal Group" for an entire decade (1980-1990) in the annual Downbeat and Playboy jazz polls. The group won Playboy's poll again in 1992.

In 1994, the group released an album that was an enticing departure from anything they had done previously. "The Manhattan Transfer Meets Tubby The Tuba," the group's first children's recording, was hailed by USA Today as a "charming rendition" of the 1945 Paul Trip/George Kleinsinger classic.

The Manhattan Transfer's "Swing" album, released in 1997, pays tribute to the 1930s swing era with some of the most classic songs of the twentieth century. "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "Java Jive" and "Clouds" punctuate this harmonic treat. Their 2000 album "The Spirit Of St. Louis" is a spirited interpretation of Louis Armstrong capturing the vocal group at its best.

Since their inception, The Manhattan Transfer has refused to limit themselves to one type of music. "Our signature is clearly four-part harmony," explains Hauser. "We based our voicings on the structure of the sax section of the Count Basie Band, blending soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices."

Contemporary music's premier vocal ensemble continues to push the envelope. Times and fashion may change, but the music of The Manhattan Transfer is truly eternal.
