"POWER"FUL PERFORMANCE COMING TO SENECA NIAGARA CASINO
Niagara Falls, NY, July 2004 - Tower of Power's horn driven, in-your-face sound of funky jazz blended with soul will take the stage at Seneca Niagara Casino's Bear's Den Showroom on Saturday, August 28, at 9 p.m. Tickets for the 10-piece band performance are $25 and can be purchased at SenecaNiagaraCasino.com, Eight Clans Gift Shop, ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster locations, including Kaufmann's stores.
Bandleader Emilio Castillo was born in Detroit, where he fell in love with soul music. As a teenager, he started a group called the Motowns. When baritone saxophonist Stephen "The Funky Doctor" Kupka saw the Motowns at a county fair in 1967, he introduced himself to Castillo and the two became friends. The first song the pair penned together was the band's signature classic, "You're Still A Young Man."
In 1968, the Motowns became Tower of Power. The duo was joined by first saxophone Lenny Pickett, who played most of the solos. Trumpeter Greg Adams did most of the arrangements. They became a fixture in the Bay Area music scene, and in 1971 cut their first record, "East Bay Grease." They set themselves apart from the competition with a show band's worth of horns, usually three saxes, two trumpet/flugelhorn players, bassist, guitarist and several keyboardists. The line-ups went through numerous changes, hitting a commercial and critical highpoint from 1973 to 1975.
Tower went through a down period in the early 1980s but never disbanded. In 1991, they re-emerged with additional talent and a new record for Epic/Sony, "Monster On A Leash," followed by "T.O.P." in 1993. Overall, career-defining tunes include "So Very Hard To Go," "What Is Hip?" "Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now," "Soul Vaccination," "Don't Change Horses" and "You Ought To Be Havin' Fun."
Tower of Power's up-front brass section serves as the prototype for today's retro-swing bands, lending their singular horns to immortal tracks by Elton John, Rod Stewart, the Eurythmics, Phish, Huey Lewis, Santana, Michael Bolton and hosts of others. When not in the studio the band tours constantly, crisscrossing the world with sold out shows.
